Question 7
7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel have learnt in the progression from it to the full production?
I have learnt that the preliminary task has helped me for the final idea because I can analyse the footage that was taken and make improvements. This has helped me with improvements because the video itself was Plain and short which helped me to add improvements on how to make the short film more entertaining. I have learnt that looking at popular opening sequences can help me for when I plan my final idea by analysing the video using mice en scene.
From the preliminary task I did not use as many techniques as I did for the full production. I have used and developed the use of a camera which our group have used a variety of camera angles that can make the final production look professional.
From lesson 1 I have learnt that using storyboards is helpful for when I plan my opening sequence and it was very useful as a group that we shared ideas which all of us had similar ideas because we knew that the opening sequence is a coming of age genre so as a group we worked together on how to make our ideas fit in with the genre. Once we gathered our ideas on a mind map, we started to create a storyboard so we can picture what the opening sequence will be like. following on from the storyboard we started to write a script which only involved writing stage directions and a character profile. each member had a role in this task so we could get it done quicker.
Once we finished all the planning for our opening sequence we started to search for an actor that would fit the role of the character and we needed to find a location for the filming. It was fairly easy to do this because the actor that was perfect for the role was available and a very reliable person. The location did not take to long as we found a house that was accessible for the group and the actor. The problem was deciding a date to film on so we had a discussion on who would be available for what day. Once we had done the filming we stated to edit our footage but we had to film the rest of the footage again because we didn't have a variety of camera angles and the lighting wasn't right when replaying the footage. We then pieced the footage together and started to edit. The editing took a while mainly because we were trying to use the right song and text to go into our film. I have learnt from the editing that use of camera angles and sound can have an affect on our footage which a variety of camera we used when we re-filmed our opening sequence has made it more appealing and interesting to the audience. I have learnt new skills from this task which my editing and camera skills have improved.
We also had to sort out the typography because we wanted the text on the screen to be in the right position we wanted. This was crucial for our opening sequence because it gives the audience an idea of the narrative because of the type of typography we were using. This was another way of trying to connect with our character. This was key to hooking the viewer so they would be interested in the rest of the narrative.
I have learnt the key features that can make a difference in our opening sequence such as the sound and typography which played a huge part in our film so the audience can maybe see what kind of personality that the character has and it was also one way of getting the audience intrigued and making them question the narrative.
