Sound

A playlist of Possible songs that we could use for our opening sequence.

The following songs are ones which we think would better suit our opening.

This song makes our opening sequence more upbeat yet slightly changes the audiences views on how they view the character. it would make our opening more interesting and gain the audiences attention, but doesn't suit how we originally interpreted our opening sequence.
The song is a good length which matches up with our opening. It also gives the audience a better image of our character.

This would be a good song for background music as it has no dialect and has a quite consistent throughout and it isn't too upbeat or too depressing. Although, even though it does have good qualities it and would compliment our opening sequence as relaxing background music, it doesn't really suit our characters personality or his actions.

From Bensound)

This song would work well with our opening sequence as it suits are characters objectives and create a tense atmosphere. This song also offers a different perspective from the other songs and completely changes the way the audience look at the character and the opening sequence as a whole.

Script

Learning comment: by making a script will help us when we are going to start filming for our opening sequence because we will know what to do for each shot without looking at the story board.

Shot list

Leaning comment: this task will help us as a group because we will know exactly what each shot will include and what the actor will be doing in our opening sequence.

Relationship with Friends: None, as he doesn't leave his computer and is bullied by just about everyone when he does because of his intellectual abilities
Job: No job
Dress Style: Usually just casual-wear but sometimes he just throws on the first thing that he can find
Religion: None
Hobbies: Hacking into the school's databases and changing the grades of people that bully him

Favourite Sports: None
Favourite Food: Whatever food that has been brought up by his Mother. He does like Doritos a lot though
Positive Trait: Focused
Negative Trait: Highly antisocial

Ambitions: Wants to either topple governments or (more likely) hack into a well-known conglomerate, and, instead of being prosecuted, getting hired by said company to improve their firewalls
Audience Dislike or Like: For just the opening scene, I think that the audience's opinion will be mixed as they don't really learn anything about him in just the opening scene. If the audience were to see the rest of the film they would probably feel sympathy because it would show the audience that he gets bullied from everyone at school because he is intellectual

Typography

(By Kit Fielder)

How typography might look:

Learning comment: this task i have found out what kind of text and fonts we'll will be using for our final idea. This task i have leant that typography is important for when we make our opening sequence because the text is the first thing the audience will see on the screen.

Representation of films

Leaning comment: from this task I have learnt that the use of mise en scene can create representation of social groups. This task has helped me for when I make my own opening sequence because listening to different sounds and looking at the camera shots taken in opening sequences can represent films and can identify social groups

Audience profile

Preliminary Task

From the preliminary task i have learn't new camera skills and how to make effective footage from using different editing techniques and camera shots.

Producers and Distributors

Learning comment: I am surprised at the amount of companies that have made a fortune over some of the coming of age films that some have distributed. I am also surprised that some companies such as Columbia pictures and 20th Century Fox were founded nearly a decade ago which has shown how far these distributors have come to be well-known.

Director Case Study

Greg Mottola was born on July 11, 1964 in Dix Hills, Long Island, New York, USA as Gregory James Mottola. He is a director and producer, known for Superbad (2007), Paul (2011) and Adventureland(2009). Both films adventure land and Superbad have an upbeat tune in the opening sequences Greg Mottola tends to not re-use actors in his films because of the different types of film that he makes provide certain characters for certain ages. The narrative for his films are quite different but his films Superbad and adventure land feature relationships. Mottola's has a particular style for his films which the genre for most of his films are comedy and the two films "Superbad" and "adventure land" are about a life of a teenager that finds love.

Learning comment:from this task I have learnt that using diegetic or non-diegetic sound can be useful for when I'm making my own opening sequence. I have also learnt from this task that the use of voices can have an impact on my opening sequence because it can give the audience an insight of what the character in my opening sequence is like just through the characters voice.

Narrative structure

Learning comment: from this task I have learnt that following narrative theories can help me when I'm making my opening sequence. For example, Propps character types theory can help me for when I decide what characters I'm going to use and how many roles I'll have for the characters e.g. hero, villain.

Analyse previous student work

I liked the introduction when it starts of with a name of a production and how the they use sound in the first 30 seconds of the video. What i disliked about this video was the setting because after the first minute of this opening sequence because i thought the where the film was set was dull and too plain. The strength of this video was the use of non-diegetic sound at the start which made me think of the character and how he/she feels. This opening sequence could improve on text because there is not enough used which they could display it throughout the whole sequence instead of including it in the first minute. The use props was very effective because it gives the audience an idea of what the narrative is such as the rope suggesting that someone committed suicide. The sound was good quality although the music used was a song played all the way through the video. This opening sequence's target audience are people that want to stop bullying and are people that want to stop it before it can be resulted in damage. The camera work is not that great because there is a lot of constant movement which leaves no time for the audience see what happening in each scene.

In this opening sequence i liked the use of text and how it was displayed on screen such as text of the names of the actors being displayed on building walls. this was also used in other places of the building that this opening sequence was set in. The use of camera angles in this opening sequence was one of the strenghts in this video because it showed the facial expressions of the characters and dominance of the characters. the music was effective in this video because it was upbeat and it made me have a sense of unexpectedness throughout the whole video. The use of mise en scene was good because they used camera angles and low key lighting which made this video interesting. the use of camera angles was very effective such as close ups because the audience can see the characters facial expressions and can find out how the character is feeling. Camera movement was good because it was still and was filmed calmly and not rushed when moving. After the first minute the narrative was shown because other characters were introduced.

In this opening sequence i really liked the use of resources used and how the video was planned to make to make the text look creative by using make-up. What i disliked about this video was the camera movement because it was bit shaky when trying to focus on text and it was not still when concentrated on the character. the creator of this opening sequence could improve on the use of camera movement because in some of the scenes their were times where the camera could have been for focused on the image. The use of mine en scene was good in the opening sequence because the text used was very creative and the use of colour was very effective because it was dark colours that could suggest the narrative. the music was slow and low pitch. This created a gloomy kind of atmosphere but it was good quality because it is relatable to what the character is doing in the first couple of minutes of the video. This opening sequence had a variety of camera angles but mostly 'over the shoulder' shots but this was good because this makes the audience concentrate on what the character is looking at. the narrative is shown after the first minute when images of other people are shown suggesting that the narrative is about a girl that likes a boy.

Learning comment: From these three videos that i have watched i have learnt that the use of text is useful when making my own opening sequence which displaying text across the screen for most of the video can be affective when making my own because it there will be more for the audience to look at and this will make the video interesting. I have also learnt that being creative when it comes to text and sound can be useful for me when i make my own opening sequence. Sound can be very useful in my opening sequence because it can suggest what type of film it is.

Conventions of an opening sequence

Leaning comment: from this task I have learnt that key lighting can be useful when it come to making my own opening sequence because it shows that character can be identified and the audience can guess what the narrative is like through colour.

Coming of age timeline

Learning comment: I have learnt that coming of age films are serious drama films until the late 80s where as the films from the 90s and onwards turn more into a comedy and more about teenagers and what they get up to in school.
key conventions:
This will be helpful in making my own film because of the certain techniques other film companies use in different era's
